China’s Hainan island is very possibly the last easily-accessed tropical surf destination that remains virtually empty. In the fall and winter season, from November until February, Northeast swells bring consistent waves to the island’s east coast. Hainan is only now starting to show up on the world surfing map. With a good variety of point and beach breaks and a small number of surfers, one can expect to get a lot of waves, and to have a great time experiencing the unique culture of China’s southern-most province.

What airport should I fly into?
Fly into either of Hainan’s two airports, Haikou or Sanya. Haikou is on the north end; about a two hour drive south to RYW. Sanya is in the south of the island, and is an hour and a half from RYW.

What are the conditions like?
In the peak surf season, November through February, Hainan’s east coast generally gets a swell a week. The swells tend to peak for a day or two at head-high or better, with chest- to shoulder-high waves during the days before and after the peak of the swell. The better swells of the season can sometimes offer surf as big as double overhead.
Expect glassy conditions during the early morning and after- noon, and light to strong offshores during the day. In Hainan, colder temperatures can accompany good swell, so bring a full 3/2 wetsuits for the coldest days, as well as a top for warmer days.

What is there to do when not surfing?
When guests are surfed out, other activities are available, in- cluding riding our SUPs up the river, hiking on the gorgeous hillsides, fishing, or taking a trip into the inland town for massages or shopping.
