During the last week of October, some of the best noseriders in the world - including Sam Bleakley, Wingnut, Matt Cuddihy, Harrison Roach, Harley Ingleby, Bay Bay and Chou Wen Ling - were surfing Riyuewan's waves. Have a look to some noseriding photos:

Besides being an incredible longboarder, Sam Bleakley has also explored many surf destinations and written numerous books about his travellings. Check his website out here.

Julieta's Blog - Swatch Girls Pro at Riyuewan

Written by Julieta Hepner Monday, 07 November 2011 03:00

Riyuewan hosted some of the best pro longboarders in the world to define the winner of the ASP 2011 Women's World Longboard Title, the first ever official surf competition in China.

Local surfers participated at the event too; Darci Liu had got a wildcard to represent China. She did a great performance but had got defeated by double world champion Jennifer Smith on the first round. Monica Guo participated at the trials and compete with two of the best Taiwanese female pro surfers, Bay Bay and Wen Ling Chou. Wen Ling won the heat but had got eliminated on the first round by Lindsay Steinriede, who later became the 2011 women's lonboard world champion.

Click here to watch some videos about it.

Most of local surfers got a job during the event; I coordinate the surf lessons for the media and worked at the registration desk hosting the VIP.

Of course this event had positives and negatives repercussions. Have been part of such an important episode in the history of surfing in China was, of course, a very interesting personal experience. Eventhough Riyuewan is not the same authentic cosy spot anymore. Hopefully the development of the surfing industry in China will be controlled in some way to protect the small local businesses and the environment.

It is said that the ISA is also planning a surf contest by January in the same spot. Hopefully a men's one.

Have a look at some pictures of the event. Girls crowd in South China Sea:

...and the surf time arrived.

We all were so excited, all those kilometers and hours of searching haven't been in vain.

Unfortunately the police wasn't very happy to see a bunch of odd people playing in the open sea while waiting for a typhoon to hit the Island...

After the army switch on load sounders and obblige us to get off the water, the fun was over.

Julieta's Blog - Surfari in Hainan (Part 2) -

We drove to remote areas, where we found broad beach breaks and empty point breaks.

Sadly many 5 stars resorts and ugly holiday tall buildings were under construction there. The amount of speculation in this Island is frightening and unsustainable.

We entered in one of those hotels and checked which waves they were hiding.

The waves weren’t big enough so we decided to go back towards south.

To find the perfect spot was more difficult than what we thought:

为了找到最完美的浪比我们的想象的更困难:

Some were closing out

一些浪close out。

Some seamed messy and breaking too close to the shore.

Some seamed too far and dangerous to reach.

Fortunately Mike knew about a secret spot and took us there. We found head high, powerful, clean waves… Check them out on Part 3!
